PE>> The fact that it is my modem reporting errors, whilst THERE IS NO DATA
PE>> BEING RECEIVED means that it is bitching about not receiving any data.

RS> Not sure what you mean there. If you mean MR is blinking but we arent
RS> supposed to be transferring data, thats just because the modems are
RS> still continuously communicating with each other even when no data is
RS> attempting to be transferred between the computers. Thats part of how
RS> the error correction link operates.

RS> OTOH if you mean MR is blinking and data should be getting thru but
RS> isnt, that just means that the error correction is having difficulty
RS> getting data thru even on repeated attempts. Not unusual.

PE>> Sounds to me like Ymodem might help. Let's see if it is available on
 PE>> QWK.

RS> Yeah it is, the download protocol is a completely separate issue to
RS> whats being transferred. OTOH plain Ymodem is rather unsuitable for
RS> noisy links since the block size is much bigger and is fixed at 1K.
RS> Zmodem dynamically adjusts the block size so that errors on the link
RS> will trigger the use of smaller blocks.

RS> But we arent seeing any Zmodem errors at all now. So I cant see that a
RS> change to Ymodem is going to make any difference.

PE>> Ah, Sealink is available. Much better! Ok, it would have been nice
PE>> to see how that went under Telix, but I guess OS/2 is good enough.
PE>> Could you try a Sealink download using V42 and see how far
PE>> you get. You should get close to Zmodem speeds with Sealink, it is
PE>> very good. It is available as a normal protocol, so you can use it
 PE>> to download smplfido.zip.

RS> Yeah, I used to use it on TBBS systems until they got Zmodem very much
RS> later than anyone else. Cant see what its supposed to contribute tho.

RS> Still cant see that its any use tho. The poor thruput is due to the
RS> communication between the modems, not due to any problem with Zmodem
 RS> errors now.

You've missed my point completely. V42 Error correction is meant to do a
CRC checksum on the data and then if it doesn't match, it will retransmit.
It is the RECEIVER who has to do the error checking, the SENDER always
thinks the data has gone out properly. So if my modem is reporting errors,
it must have done a CRC check and found bad data. The trouble is, IT
DIDN'T HAVE ANYTHING to do a CRC check on! That is because you weren't
sending me a single bit of data. That is the way Zmodem works. BFN.
