Hi Steve.
>The police in the next county have publicly stated that if they
>catch anyone with a scanner they will check the memories and if
>they contain police frequencies they will prosecute
Outch!
>Note I would say our county is akin to a state or province
Your MPs must be nuts to make such laws.
>Well the way I read it in the US you are allowed to listen to
>anything as long as it is not specifically prohibited.
>Whats the situation in Canada.
We can listen to ALL freq. but we have to keep our mouth shut,
even with cellular we can listen in with the difference that in
the very early 90's (or late 80's, can't remember the year) some
politicians got screwed with an intercepted cellullar call in
quebec city (the Wylhelmy/Tremblay case) and with that event they
tried to rip us off of our "frequency rights" but they managed to
cover they asses without too much freedom infringement for the
public because the medias can now be kick real hard in the butt
if they divulge private phone calls and such...
Canada beeing the UNofficial 51st state, the crazy amarican
laws on cellular ban as affected us too. All radio shack's
scanners sold in Canada are the same sold in the US with the
result that we can no longer buy cellular capable scanners.
I can walk in the street with my PRO-43 without any policemen
harassment. I once talk to a local policeman about an event
without problems (had to shut my big yap but didn't, so my chat
with him was "illegal"):
a patrolman was chasing 3 men in a car
and one of them was shooting bullets at him with a .22LR rifle
(in the USA the criminals would have used a 15" navy gun BUT
with a legal 10 rounds magazine, heh heh heh). One was shot dead
with a single .357magnum round and the 2 other guys ran away.
