RS> Today, 6+pm, couldnt even get a 14K connect at all. First was 12K, with
RS> 20/20 hindsight I should have held on to |-) The rest were 9600s and
RS> the last I just kept going with 9600.

RS> Those are different to the test I did yesterday pm. Yesterdays I forced
RS> 9600 and 12K, essentially telling my modem to demand the one I set.
RS> Today I told it to get the best it could as usual. And got no 14K
RS> connects at all, except possibly one I didnt see cause I was debugging
RS> my auto script too and aborted that connect.

Dunno why the factory defaults don't work properly. :-( However, the
factory defaults have auto-answer on, which doesn't help much when Binkley
thinks it needs to answer the phone.

PE>>> I have a 486-33. When the 586 comes out and prices drop, I might get
 PE>>> an upgrade to 486DX2- 66. I presume that is a simple drop-in
 PE>>> replacement of the CPU?

RS>> Depends on the motherboard. Some claim to be able to, some dont. You
RS>> need the socket for it, its different to the 486. And although they
RS>> claim it will work, there is more wing it and pray than usual since
RS>> they havent been given any to try with, so surprises wont be uncommon.

PE>> How can the motherboard possibly tell the difference between the two
 PE>> chips? It's impossible! BFN.

RS> Nothing is impossible in electronics and computing. Sure thats the
RS> intention, but nothing is ever a completely perfect copy. For example
RS> there are some subtle differences between 4DOS and COMMAND.COM and
RS> between MSDOS and DRDOS. Same with memory simms to for that matter.

It is also impossible that the motherboard can tell the difference between
whether you are using 1M*3 or 1M*9 SIMMS! :-)
