| subject: | Re: Need a New Computer--money manager |
Hello I was happy with Quickbooks for over 5 years to the extent that it was the last reason for keeping Windows on my computer, since I'd found acceptable alternatives for everything else. Besides binding me to windows and despite my satisfaction with the Quickbooks software I am considerably less than happy with Intuit for several reasons all of which make me feel like Intuit considers it's customers somethig akin to "whores", bought and paid-for and worthy of any mistreatment they care to dish out. Sorry, but I have had some bad experiences with them that left me mad for many days. So I was very glad to discover "Gnucash". Gnucash is Open Source, free software, that is something of a blend between Quickbooks and Quicken, but fully capable of handling the most important functions of small business such as estimates and bidding, cost evaluation, billing, payroll and various database functions. Like so much Open Source/*nix software it is very solid and highly configurable as well as reasonbably intuitive after a little reading. Ultimately, once familiar with what is possible, I have grown to like it better than Quickbooks because it does more of what I say instead of demanding that I follow it exactly when it is not necessary to prevent mistakes, just heavy handed, as Quickbooks often is. It certainly doesn't hurt that it is not spyware nor leaning toward extortion in some areas that I imagine you've probably ground your teeth over like I have. Grrrr.! Thank you Gnucash.
