subject: Win98FE Harddrivicide?

-> JH> Disaster struck when he went to install Win98FE from an OEM disc.
-> JH> It appears that the Linux FDISKed the HDD to full 65GB, and in the
-> JH> Win98 installation process, somehow, Windows FDISK was run.
-> JH> Win98FE has a problem with HDD>64MB, and it appears that the damn
-> JH> thing wrapped-around the HDD addressing, overwriting his MBR. He
-> JH> now says that the HDD is dead beyond any recovery, can't be FDISKed
-> JH> or even recognized in his system.

-> JH> Question - - how can his HDD be saved?

-> My inclination would be to boot a dos floppy and try "fdisk
/mbr",  or maybe
-> tomsrtbt, and use their fdisk...

I can still boot to the Knoppix CD however the hard drive is no longer
seen after running the OEM Windows software installation CD.

-> JH> Thanks in advance. I have a procedure in mind, but I think at this
-> JH> point Wayne will be more comfy with advice from someone other than
->  JH> myself.

-> Wondering if perhaps there's something peculiar to the version of windoze, it
-> being OEM and all.

It's Windows, Hewlett Packard first release Win 98
where the fdisk is known to be defective.
