(IIRC) ATA drives I bought in the past 4 years that failed, most within
the warranty period, most within 1 year, several within 90 days:

15G Quantum 5400 (out of 1 year warranty less than 1 month upon failure)
20G Quantum 7200 (replacement by Maxtor)
30G Maxtor 7200 (replacement of above 20G Quantum)
40G IBM 7200
40G IBM 7200 (replacement of above IBM, replaced by Hitachi)
60G Seagate 7200
80G IBM 7200 (replaced by Hitachi)

Those above represent approximately 50% of the total ATA drives I
acquired in the past 4 years.

SCSI drives I bought in the past 4 years that failed:
None
