Thanks for the vote of confidence. :-)

Hi Ray,

It really pays to be familiar with which files are in which \OS2 \MPTN
\IBMLAN \IBMCOM directories! In all about 70MB of files.

Yep I recovered and re-timestamped them all courtesy of another
accessible partition of the same OS/2 vintage. Now perfectly clean and
booting as logical "D:", instead of Primary "C:". So
I'm pleased about
that as it's the first time I've had a completely successful Primary -->
logical *conversion* along with a boot-letter change on a non-LVM
system. Unfortunately, as the sequence on the HDU is now :

1. IBM BM
2. DOS-WIN311-GEOS [C:]
3. W2K - standalone C: - not via #2
4. W4 - D: logical

Where previously it was only items 2+3+4 with all three as primaries [C:]

Consequently W2K is trying to boot from . . . . . . /partition 2 on
the disk, vice 3 that it now is.

Using the installation-CD--> HD recovery console is great! :-( ,
after an attrib -R C:\boot.ini, you can type "type c:\boot.ini", but
even though there is an EDLIN.EXE in the system32 directory, it won't
let you use it, as it's not in the list of allowable commands displayed
by HELP! It will even let you DELETE it, which I actually did, after
copying it to boot.old, thinking that as the copy command worked that I
would be able to type "copy con: c:\boot.ini" etc. That's when it gets
pesky and lets you know "that operation isn't supported" or words to
that effect! :-(

You can set the \WINNT[\WIN here] to the %systemroot% directory, and
then use "fixboot" [there's also a "fixmbr"], which
because the default
value [with a 30 second timeout] is partition 2, with an entry also for
partition 3 - in anticipation of the situation, ends up writing the W2K
bootsector over the bootsector of partition1 [IBM BM] and consequently
it always boots to itself, without altering the MBR, where IBM BM is
*still* set as active. So at least I now know *how* it does that! ;-)

When it did this I screwed up again:-[ [was getting tired, I guess,
another pair of back to back 12-hour sessions] and forgot to delay the
"reboot because of new hardware", and then immediately alter the
boot.ini *prior* to the reboot, which would have saved the present hassle.
It also wouldn't let me [re]create a former FAT32 partition on the drive
between cylinders 990 & 1245 [1992.4 MB], and neither would a PQPM
floppy boot [V3].

Guess I'll just have to "en-slave" it again in another system and edit
it there. But at least nothing on that partition has gone missing.

Might knock off now and go get sleep before attempting any further work
there.

Mike
