most likely what happened in Ed's case is that the system he uses converts
""high ascii"" characters... even if he had used the
proper character in his reply, the bbs would likely have replaced it when
he uploaded his posts...

FWIW: in this system, i can't enter any codes (above or below 128) by using
the ALT-keypad method... at best i have something called
"compose" which i've seen others talk about using when the write
characters like „ and “... i used to enter those via ALT-keypad but not any
more :(
