     Thirty-seven years ago, on April 12, 1961, Major
Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin blasted off aboard the
Russian spacecraft Vostok 1, becoming the first
human to reach outer space.  Traveling at an
estimated speed of 17,400 miles per hour, Vostok
attained an altitude of 325 kilometers (203 miles)
and went into orbit around the Earth.  Gagarin died
in a plane crash in 1968 at the age of 33.
     And we'll be back next weekend with more
