My students and I just came back from several day field trip to
Washington DC.  They participated in laying of wreath ceremony with
honor guard at tomb of unknown soldier.  As we headed home the students
started talking about the significance of the 21 steps, 21 seconds of
hesitation and the 21 gun salute. Does anyone out there know the real
answer.  All research in proper sources, even a military guide fail to
explain.  Sought help from local and state military offices to no avail?
