G'Day,
Just got the latest and greatest - here's a copy of a message from Trev
Roydhouse - I deleted some irrelevant sections, but the reply is below.
Looks like the solution is for you one of us to disable V42b and then the
connect becomes (more or less) trouble free.

Regards
Adam

Yep, 100%.

It's a bug in the latest version of the Rockwell modem chipset
which Maestro and Supra are using (to date the only modems which
have problems with the Spirit -- I've been using my Spirit since
October last year and the "problems" only appeared in the last
couple of months when several of my nodes bought the new Maestro
144 series V32bis modems; their "old" Maestro Super Excecutives
(V32) worked without problem).

Here's a message from AUST_MODEM which throws some light on the
state of the play:

 NSW Subj: Maestro 144FM slow!

 Hi Rod,

After just returning from a long and very enlightening
visit with the technician at Comma Corp and phone calls to
various contacts in the industry, I have gleened the following
info that is, as far as I can tell, correct.

Rockwell have recognised that there is a bug in the
rockwell chipset software that causes this problem. They will
NOT admit to this to anybody, but, an inside source has
confirmed this to be the facts. Maestro are also aware of the
bug but probably won't admit to it to their customers.

If possible could you please reply and let me know the
other brands that you mentioned to Steve were having this
problem with the Spirits, it would appear that technicians from
all quarters are interested in this problem.

       Rgds,
       Tim.

The Maestro recommended "fix" is to call the Spirit with V42
disabled and rely on MNP4. Just a hassle really, I'm not sure
I'd call it a major problem except for the fact that due to the
Spirit's slowish MNP implementation (1590 cps compared to its
V42 speed of 1680 cps) it would normally be better to call with
V42 enabled. Still, what's 100 cps worth?
