Hello Mark -

CA>>> Won't work here. Either it's my BIOS (Award) or my boot
CA>>> manager but something gives me a "DMI pooling data"
CA>>> message and the boot process stops before ever accessing
CA>>> the bootmanager's files on the hard drive. :-\

ML>> a quick google on that phrase seems to show that it has to
ML>> do with the BIOS and that resetting it and/or clearing the
ML>> DMI data area (usually a setting in the BIOS) may cure the
ML>> problem...

Keyword being "may". :-)

CA>> I don't like editing the registry and _really_ don't like
CA>> messing with BIOS settings.

ML> i understand that... however, the DMI thingy is nothing
ML> more than a switch to clear it... the machine will rebuild
ML> it on the next bootup...

Possibly ... the series of 'steps' listed here gives me the
impression it may not be quite as simple as you think.

CA>> Some years ago (over a decade) a helpline person for
CA>> Gateway gave me access to _engineering_ software to change
CA>> the BIOS on a Gateway. Thinking I knew what I was doing I
CA>> totally disabled that system and never did get it going
CA>> again after that. :-\

ML> ouch... i remember that some Gateways and HPs have an
ML> option in the DMI area to view the DMI error log, too...

ML> at least, i'm pretty sure that it is the DMI stuff that i'm
ML> thinking of...

I prefer to err on the side of caution. I've totally disabled a
working system (as previously mentioned) by messing with BIOS
settings I did not fully comprehend. My interest in the DVD
burner was not enough to risk many days of scrambling to get my
machine functional again or maybe never getting it to function
again. ;-)

I thought it would be nice to have, I tried, it was too risky
(my opinion) to go any further, I exchanged the DVD burner for
a new 52x35x52 CDRW burner that installed and booted up with
_no_problems_ of any kind. I had some difficulty removing HP's
burner apps but everything is 'good' now and I am OK with not
having a DVD burner for the time being.
