WARNING TO FARM OWNERS
Tennessee is the second largest marijuana producing state in the
nation, second only to Hawaii. Most Tennessee-produced marijuana is
grown on farms leased from legitimate farmers or purchased on a
contract for deed arrangement. If marijuana is grown on your land, the
law provides that the United States Government may _TAKE_YOUR_FARM_
unless you can prove that the unlawful conduct was carried on without
your knowledge.
You should make sure that your land is not being used to grow
marijuana. You can protect yourself by: (1) Checking the identity and
references of any potential buyer or leasee; (2) Include in all
leases language that allows you or your agent to inspect the property
at any time; (3) Inspecting the property regularly, and (4) Promptly
call the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation on their toll free 24 hours
a day hotline or the nearest office of the Drug Enforcement
Administration if you suspect that marijuana is being grown.
Watch for the following indications that the people on your farm may
be growing marijuana: (1) Purchases made under false names;
(2) Payments made with large amounts of cash; (3) Field work performed
at night; (4) Corn planted late or never harvested; (5) Patchwork
irrigation systems; (6) Drying racks and pruning equipment; (7) Alarm
systems and protective dogs.
PERSONS CONVICTED IN THE STATE OR FEDERAL COURT OF PLANTING,
CULTIVATING, GROWING, HARVESTING, OR STORING A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE
SHALL BE INELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN OR RECEIVE BENEFITS IN ANY
USDA-CFSA PROGRAM.
