Astronomy Picture of the Day

                         Astronomy Picture of the Day

Discover the cosmos! [1] Each day a different image or photograph of our
fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a
                           professional astronomer.

Explanation: It was Halloween and the sky looked like a creature. Exactly
which creature, the astrophotographer was unsure [5] but ( possibly you can
suggest one [6] ). Exactly what caused this eerie apparition [7] in 2013 was
sure: one of the best auroral displays [8] in recent years. This spectacular
aurora [9] had an unusually high degree of detail [10] . Pictured here [11] ,
the vivid green and purple auroral colors [12] are caused by high atmospheric
oxygen [13] and nitrogen [14] reacting to a burst of incoming electrons [15]
. Birch trees [16] in Tromsų [17] , Norway [18] formed an also eerie
foreground [19] . Recently, new photogenic auroras [20] have accompanied new
geomagnetic storms [21] .

                        Tomorrow's picture: mostly moon
