subject: problems with ssh

I am pleased to discover that there is a newsgroup for Raspberry Pi
owners.

I received my kit on Monday and it is up and running today. The system
looks good with keyboard, mouse and screen attached but I really want to
use it headless, running through my main desktop (Ubuntu 17.10) under VNC.

Right now I am having trouble with SSH communication either way between
my main desktop (beta in the hosts listing below) and raspberrypi.

********************************************************************
127.0.0.1 localhost
#127.0.1.1 jack-XPS-8910
#127.0.1.1       jack
127.0.1.1       beta
192.168.0.100   alpha
192.168.0.101   beta
192.168.0.102   gamma
192.168.0.104   raspberrypi
# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1     ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters

*********************************************************************

The raspberry pi is on a wifi connection called raspberry and beta is a
wired connection.

I can ping successfully in both directions.

when I attempt ssh as follows:

jack@beta:~$ ssh pi@192.168.0.104
pi@192.168.0.104's password:

I enter the password and the terminal freezes.

I get exactly the same result in the other direction.

Any suggestions?

Best Regards,
             Jack Fearnley
