| subject: | Re: Hard drive woes |
Greetings
Somehow I think your salesman is either dealing in poor quality cabling
or has some prejudice against Serial ATA because his statement makes no
sense. Not only is SATA cabling tight and concise, reducing leverage from
edge-to-edge, but the connectors require vastly slighter force to insert
and remove. In fact, some hardware testers have focussed on that feature
as one of the few areas of complaint, saying that it may be more likely to
accidentally disconnect a drive because so little force is required. I
don't know what the exact percentages may be but it should be obvious that
cables don't die by just laying around. They generally experience stress
when pulled, especially during disconnection. The greater number of wires
offers more chances for failure and the wider the connector the greater the
leverage on those tiny wires. 80 wire cables offer not only more
connections but all crammed into the same space so the wire itself is of
smaller gauge and strength. If they could be b
undled tightly packed in a round configuration like a communications
"snake" cable, they would lend strength to each other ( much like
the "fasces" [sp?] symbol of the roman empire symbollizing the
typical united-we-stand concept ) wheras when configured in a flat ribbon
there is much more opportunity for stress on a single wire, which by itself
is very weak.
I suspect this salesman is exhibiting the frustration that is often felt by
all of us when our equipment is made obsolete by something new. While I
have been often stung by such changes SATA is one change that I embrace
with enthusiasm. I can't see any downside and it's advantages are
numerous.
