RS> Are you completely sure you were running with S10=2 for those on Sat
RS> arvo, an earlier message seemed to suggest not. Dave seemed pretty
RS> adamant that S10=1 wasnt very desirable too, sounds logical as well.
Yes, I was using S10=2.
RS> Dunno in that case the line drops out after your modem is fully
RS> satisfied about a good incoming call and has woken up Binkley. Its
RS> possible that failed calls confuse you modem more, it hasnt seen what it
RS> thinks is a good connect at all and may in that case get more confused
RS> about hearing the busy tone from the exchange and trying to treat it as
RS> a carrier. I dont know that, thats just speculation on my part.
Well it's better than the theory I've got at the moment!
PE>> Therefor, it is when you connect at a funny speed,
RS> No, you are assuming the 12K connects are common, they arent. They are
RS> only say 5% of the failed connects.
Hmmm. Ok, but we've got a definite problem your end right? Your modem has
NO right to drop down to 12K unless mine agrees, right? So how can it have
negotiated 12K when I wasn't agreeing? Can you try switching Adaptive
Retrain off for a few days?
RS> But your theory would result in the busy problem only being seen after a
RS> 12K connect. Thats not what happens.
How about the problems arise when the Spirit receives a negotiation request
when it has been disabled?
PE>> In the meantime, I'll reduce the Maximus log on time to 4 minutes.
RS> Cant do any harm.
Be interesting to see what happens. I believe my modem does hang up after
9 minutes. This way Maximus should give it the flick.
PE>> P.S. I tried simulating the problem with my 1200 bps modem, and every
PE>> time I hang up, the modem hangs up too. And that's with S10=3. I
PE>> think I'll ask again in the Spirit echo. BFN.
RS> The other thing to do is to have phone in parallel with the modem, pick
RS> up the line and listen to it when the modem is hungup like that and make
RS> quite sure there really is an exchange busy in that case. We are
RS> assuming there is but it would be worth confirming that.
How am I supposed to hear the exhange over the din the modem would be making?
(comes back). I decided to try dialling with my 1200 bps modem, and
plugging the T200 in, and listening. There was a real racket as they
connected, and continued to be, and then I got my 1200 bps modem to hang
up, and when I did the 14400 dropped out a couple of seconds after, and I
heard the exchange tone Dooo dooo dooo. I'm not sure exactly what I was
supposed to be looking for, but basically my modem is hanging up as soon as
the person on the other end does, which is what it is supposed to do, and
is doing well. It is just the odd occasion where something goes haywire.
I presume there is a bug in the Spirit somewhere which gets it into a mode
where it doesn't monitor CD properly.
BFN.
