Since this was posted, I have seen two computers with problems with the 
Avira Launcher "real time protection" status icon in the System Tray.  Both 
computers showed an Open Umbrella signifying that "real time protection" ( 
On Access ) scanning was enabled.  Attempting to disable the "real time 
protection" failed.  Going Into Contral Panel and choosing the "Avira 
Antivirus" applet and toggling enable and disable "real time protection" 
would not change the system tray icon status.

On the first PC I removed both Avira Launcher and Avira Antivirus and 
reinstalled.  This corrected the problem.

On the second PC I only removed the Avira Launcher and that corrected the 
problem.
