I think that the competition of high-res is between dvd-audio, dts and
sacd. The quality of these is about the same. The reason dvd-a and/or
dts will win out over sacd is because the technology to play them -
dvd players - is already a standard item in most households and it
costs very little to add dvd-a capability to a dvd player.
That said, I hear very little difference between DVD-Audio and DTS
audio which most people ALREADY have if they have a multi-channel home
entertainment system. In fact, many DVD-Audio discs ALSO have DTS
versions on the same disc because the companies realize that dvd-a is
not a popular format, whereas many people have dts capability.
So I think that there is a very good possibility that the Beatles
catalog will be re-released in DTS audio. I've heard some "homemade"
versions of Beatles albums in DTS and they sound great! Then there are
the DTS bits from the Anthology dvd which sound great (check out
Strawberry Fields during the credits at the end of Disc 4 (?).
I think it would be fantastic if they released the Beatles catalog
with mono, stereo and dts versions. I would run, not walk to the store
to buy DTS versions of the Beatles catalog if it also had stereo and
mono included.
