I inadvertantly passed by your post so I'm
inititiating this reply rather than resetting pointers.

You spoke of mounting a floppy and than shuting down the machine without
umounting it causing difficulty and thus not wanting to share
your Linux system with W2K.

CNTRL - ALT - DEL may not be an elegant way to close a session
but it does stop processes and umounts your drives before shutdown.

That said stay with what you're comfortable with.

I'm leaving Windows behind so it won't be an issue for me.
