I have used the Purves Biology text for several semesters, now,
and find it less than completely satisfactory for teaching.  It
certainly looked good from a faculty perspective, but it is a bit
unusual in its approach to some subjects and it is hard to for
students to follow in places.

A widely used alternative is
Biology, 6th Edition
N.A. Campbell and J.B. Reece
Benjamin Cummings, 2002.

the Cell" is available on-line at PubMed, the US National Library of
Medicine book shelf:
