Thankyou. glad i am not the only one who noticed. I have been more or less
"lurking" here for about 5 weeks (I had gotten out of the habit of
writing in any forums I had been on, and was out for about a year.) In the
time I have been on here I have noticed there has been very little talk
about real homeschooling issues, I didn't say none, just very little.
Not that the posts from kids wanting penpals etc. wouldn't count, but
seems to me that a while back there was more to this.
I thought I had responded to one person's question on how to obtain
curriculum materials, but am not sure my message got out.
Anyway do you happen to know whether or not
the lady who wrote the "far above rubies" curriculum still gets on
here? (Can't remember her name right now) I would like to talk to her.
I would also like to speak to Ruth Beechick (sp?) she used to get on here at
times.
I remember copying a couple of your posts for reference.
How's it going?
We are trying to wrap up a very difficult "school year" here. I say that
because last July I gave birth to our eighth child. She got
sick with the whooping cough in the first week of September and was
hospitalized a week.
My oldest, and only other daughter was also sick with it and so was I.
The rest of the family had to be put on antibiodics as soon as we
found out what was going on, so they avoided getting it full blown.
The sickness left us very tired, and our immune systems weak, so that
we caught about every cold and virus that came along. By God's grace,
we got over the thing, and managed to plod through the school work,
but it was slow and difficult for me. I remained tired and began to
feel confused and have other strange symtoms the spring. Finally I went to
the doctor and was put on thyroid medication. It seems to have helped a
little,
but I still drag around more than I think I should.
At any rate, all this has really been a difficult, and to my mind, it seems
have not accomplished what I intended to this year.(Not that I ever
really do, but this has been low level accomplishment by comparison)
The kids also have seemed to be exceptionally difficult to motivate, and
I think it is partly because it has been alot of paperwork this year.(except
for science fairs- 2 which were really fun)
Some of the younger boys need help with their reading and writing
skills among other things. One thing that I really found discouraging
was the sixth grade work I had my daughter in for english. We hassled through
some of the "finer"points of verbs and sentence diagramming with almost
disastrous results.I am looking for a *good* english grammar program which
will explain things more clearly. Got any suggestions?
To end with a good note though, my son who was having so much trouble has
really "blossomed" this year. We listed him as special needs and slowed him
down to the third grade level (he technically should be finishing fifth) and
he has really done well, even enjoyed it and taken the initiative at times.
That has been a real blessing to see.
I have to be going this got Long! Bye.
