 The first step, if you haven't already, is to call another BBS 
 and see if the BBS is the problem.  How does your online service 
 or internet connection work (if you have one of these)?
 
 Hyperterminal II (not the one that comes with Windows 95 but can 
 be downloaded for free) is an excellent Windows comm program.  
 Terminate is DOS, isn't it?  If the right fonts (Terminal and 
 MS-Linedraw work) aren't available, you can have ANSI problems 
 in Windows comm programs.  The fact that you have the same 
 problem in Windows and DOS (I think) suggests a modem connect 
 problem... either at your end or at the BBS.  Hope this helps.
