I've seen many interesting ideas on the evolution of the genetic code, but
are there good/supported ideas on how it has been maintained in most
lineages but altered in a select few?  Aside from just plain throwing a
wrench into the machine, is there some reason why the genetic code has been
preserved (with a few notable exceptions) across all domains of life?
