Hello All!
I am new to this group and also fairly new to the R/C hobby.
Can you first give me some ideas on the best all around setup for a car
that is around $350-400 total and is ready to win races. (Is this
possible?). Also tell me anything else your experince has taught you
about R/C off road buggy racing. Also How about Gas as a first car.
Finally, are there any people who know of good racing or clubs in the
CLeveland, OH area.
Thanks alot
-Paul

Paul,
Personally, I would stay away from gas for my first r/c. After you learn
all the mechanisms on an electric, it is very easy to switch to gas later.
As far as setting up a competition buggy for 350-400$, sure it's possible,
but I gaurantee you'll keep buyin stuff later as to compete with al the
latest upgrades and gadgets. I wouldn't consider any other racin buggies
except the Associated Worlds Car (178) or the Losi XX. Both provide smooth
operation with full ball bearings. Your radio should be a personal
preference but Futaba makes a wide range of reliable models. An electronic
speed control (esc) is neccessary to compete. I prefer Tekins Rebel (75$)
because reverse comes in handy when your just havin fun. Some tracks won't
allow esc's with reverse and the Novak Duster is a great non-reversable
model. Both of these esc's handle down to 11turn modifieds so you could
have the choice of buying a modified motor or a stock. The best motor, the
only thing to get if your gonna be racin stock, is the Trinity Midnight.
(25$) You also have to think about chargers. Digital peak chargers are the
only way to go. They fully charge your batteries very time and stop that
nasty battery "memory" caused by so many trickle type chargers. Batteries
range in a wide variety of cost, maH, and cells. 7cells provide more punch
the 6 but don't generally last as long. If you wanna race, don't get any
battery under 1700maH. Otherwise you will be chokin before the end of the
race. Serious racers make their own batteries by buyin matched loose
cells. (not a pack) This requires you to solder them with special bars and
buy special connectors. I don't see the point in this. Batteries range
from 20 to 80.
Have fun choosen the right setup for yourself. Welcome to the great sport
of r/c racin, it's addictive and money consuming! =;^>
