Me Too! I have some bad things to say about many of the others as well:
Chaparral: Heavy, over-designed, crowded chasis, requires many button
pushes just to move the dish over a little, $169 flat rate
for simple repairs, 7 days to ship to CA from FL for repair,
remotes are getting hard to find, caps go bad--resulting in
a bunch of static on VC channels, expensive, on-screen jumps
around without a strong signal, they run so hot that they had
to put a noisy fan in some models
Echosphere and HTS: Traditionally noted for bad power supply design, some
models reqire obsure codes for programming. On the plus side,
their UHF remotes usually work good. You have to delete a sat
to re-locate it.
GI: After a while the Caps start losing their capacitance, and the
picture looks worse. This is a problem with most receivers,
since many older models run fairly hot.
Uniden: In my experience they are just as (or more) dependable than the
other brands. OK, the 2020 model had some problems with QC, it
may have been because they had moved their manufacturing op to
korea or China. I think I heard that the workers had burned
down the Phillipine factory. I heard that they weren't going to
build any more SQ560 or 4600 receivers. Is that true. My local
distributor said they weren't going to get any more in, so I
bought the last 5 they had.
You might be able to get a new system for $1500; maybe if you call around to
get a deal, offer your help in installation. Good Luck.
