I don't believe Hyperterminal "sent a whole bunch of crap" even though 
Terminat may have.  The BBS is checking for a response to an ANSI code, and 
isn't getting it.  That usually means your comm program is set for something 
other than ANSI.
I don't believe Hyperterm supports ANSI.
