No! The only you needs a router to.

  Hitherto I even didn't know

No need to know exactly.

It IS straight forward and easy to setup your computer and local net
for connecting to internet:

A use the software router like eCSConNet (eCS 1.1 CD#2) or injoy
or
B use a hardware router

The only difference between them is:
A needs the computer connected to internet needs to be
up and running when another computer has to connect to internet
   in setup.cmd:
ipgate ON - the computer running ISDNPM/eCSConNet/injoy
because the computer running the router is your gateway
   ipgate OFF - else
When you owns more than one computer the computer having the
software router running needs 2 ethernet network cards installed
when you have DSL - else it will connect the internet through either
   modem or the ISDN card.
lan0 (the first one) for your local net
lan1 (the second one) for connecting the internet

B only the comnputer needs connect to internet must be on.
ipgate OFF - all computers because the router is the gateway

In both cases you have to configure the router:
- its IP it needs to be member of your local net
- a flag set that decides if your computer (router) gets
its IP from your IP when dialing in or is static.
Most ISP will give you a dynamic IP.

Hint: when you likes to save money but will spemd an extra amount for
an hardware router you should decide if you needs really a DSL/IDSN
router or a DSL router. The latter is much cheaper. You would get it
in your local computer shop for significanly less than 100 Euro.

Hint: even if you have currently only ONE computer
- avoid USB!
- avoid AVM (my provider internal newsgroups are full of problems with
even under Windows).
- avoid internal (PCI) cards. They are useless because any software
router can replace them - and you got with eCS 1.0 and 1.1 one for free.
