Hello Semware,
I have some feedback & questions regarding TSE 2.5 and 2.8.
I love TSE 2.5 and continue to use it as my editor of choice under Win95.
Although I upgraded to 2.6/2.8 I was a bit disappointed with some
aspects of the product.
So, hope you don't mind a bit of feedback...
1. TSE 2.8 is MUCH slower at responding to keystrokes like CursorUp/Down and
PageUp/Down. TSE 2.5 is VERY responsive and fast in this regard. Also,
I used a keyboard accelerator (Hyperkey) to really make 2.5 fly.
Unfortunately, TSE 2.8 does not get accelerated by this TSR.
So, I'd like to make a suggestion. Another editor I use (begrudgingly)
is called Codewright. It has a feature where the user can
enable/disable special keyboard acceleration from within the editor. It
accelerates the keyboard waaay beyond 32 chars per second which is
really great and can be adjusted to suit yourself. CW is a true
Win95/NT product. If CW can do it, why not TSE 2.X?
IMHO its a fantastic feature - not a gimmick - and does wonders for
productivity.
What do you think?
2. I am very attached to TSE 2.5's 36-line video mode. Unfortunately,
TSE 2.8 won't allow me to go fullscreen when in 36 line mode. That was
a real pain. I guess that will be addressed when a TSE for Windows is
released.
3. Full marks for TSE 2.8's syntax highlighting implementation. Whilst,
I think Ian Campbell did a great job of the old one, its nice the new
one parses the actual text
buffer.
I have one suggestion though. There are some languages (like dBase etc)
that have BOL comment delimiters like this:
* This is a comment , TSE colors me green.
The asterisk is treated as a comment ONLY if it appears as the
firstnonwhite char.
However, the asterisk is also a math operator. So in the following
example, the
text '* delta' would appear as a green comment. eg.
alpha = beta * delta
There is no way around this except to provide a new comment delimiter
type which has the special attribute that it applies only to BOL
comments. In fact I had to make this very same mod to Ian Campbell's
color.asm in TSE 2.5.
That's all for feedback.
I know you hate to talk about what Semware is developing next, but boy
I'm curious. I don't want to know WHEN but I sure would like to know
WHAT your directions are.
I've got a lot of belief in you guys. Keep up the great work.
Love to hear from you,
Ross Boyd
