'Modern' software is often just a rewrite of earlier software.
At times the early versions are faster and more efficient than
the 'modern' version. I don't see a great deal of innovation
lately just a lot of "me too" not unlike what has happened to
KNOPPIX with all the "me too"s out there now. 

When you don't have to cater to the vagaries of the unwashed
masses of computer illiterates you can afford the luxury of
using hardware and software that gets the job done without the
need to 'impress' onlookers with the flashing lights and
bells-n-whistles. :-)
