MR>*** Quoting Mark Hoover from a message to Scott Adams *** MR> SA> Allfix :) MR> MH> Last time I looked there wasn't a Linux native port.....:( MR>Mark, Forgive the ignorance.. But why is Linux so popular for BBS MR>software now, is it ala a OS/2 type of thing or a distinct hate of My only reason for wanting a Linux port of anything is my entire network is Linux, I don't want to have to put up a DOS/Windows box that would have no other purpose than to run BBS stuff. As for others not sure. MR>windows or is it just superior. And two, What is the learning curve Superior is relative. Depends on what you're doing. Each OS has a strength and should be used according to those strengths. MR>for linux? Is it totally unlike windows and take a huge amount of MR>time to learn it? How is it supported for guys who are greener than MR>a leaf with it? Most Linux distributions have a GUI just like windows does. I've had people sit down at my desktop and not notice it wasn't windows until they tried to install some windows app. If you're the type of person who has issues if someone installs WordPerfect instead of Word, you're probably in trouble. Otherwise, learning the differences is just a matter of exposing yourself to it and sometimes getting out of the Microsoft way of doing things. Support varies. RedHat and Suse are supported by major companies (ie. you can call someone) as well as mailing lists. Others are supported by mailing lists, forums, etc. Fidonet even has a Linux echo (not sure how helpfull it is though). There's also a lot of info on the internet in general and newsgroups. .
