JO> Please tell me this is a joke! I thought it was...at
JO> first...Now I wish I'd saved the file, at least for the bill
JO> number.
JO> Has anyone else heard about Owlgore's latest masterpiece?
RC> The would-be Buddha of the North Woods?
Heheh...that'd be the same durn feller! What a rummy!
JO> It would appear he's pushed the "highway" in Information
JO> Highway so much that there is a bill in the Senate to make it
JO> illegal to use alcohol while on public networks?
RC> ROTFLMAO! Gotta be a parody - it's a clear 1st Amendment
RC> violation.
Right, it's got to be a joke...er, right? I guess what I can't
believe is that it would even sound plausible...but with some of the
nutbunnies in DC, I really do wonder about a lot of what they do!
JO> They even added a cute provision so that bbs's would be
JO> included in this. The FBI would be able to wire-tap your line
JO> to catch you, and evidently possession of a beer and a modem
JO> would technically be all the probable cause needed.
RC> Legally indefensible - even if such a law were constitutional -
RC> it ain't - they'd still have to show you were under the
RC> influence: blood alcohol or breathalyzer.
Hmmm..."Open container" law, maybe? Sheesh, you'd be in danger if you
even *had* beer in your house. Isn't there some country that limits
how much sugar you can buy so you can't make your own booze? When I
mentioned the "bill" to someone, they brought that up.
JO> So it would appear that you or I could be posting in the Rush
JO> echo (I suppose the real "crime" would be when we were actually
JO> online uploading in that case) and the FBI would break in to
JO> give us a MWI! (Modeming While Intoxicated?)
RC> What about posting in the nude?
Eeeeeek! I'm as good as in jail if they outlaw that! ;)
JO> Then there is the part that would make it a felony to talk
JO> about sex...I don't know how explicit it would have to be, but
JO> I'd imagine Clinton's sex life would be plenty explicit enough.
JO> Ack!
RC> Clearly a 1st Amendment violation.
Absolutely! But it sure would be handy for Clinton if it happened. He
would still do it, of course...but we just couldn't talk about it!
The Drunge report never could've leaked Zippergate over the internet.
Say, did you hear that Fox News is supposed to be hiring on Drunge
to do a show starting in about a month? It appears they think he'd be
great for a weekend "gossip" show. This could get *good*!! ;)
JO> By that token, unless we all stop talking about Clinton right
JO> now, I think WE could all be future felony offenders according
JO> to the bill!
RC> I'm sure the Dufus would love that - but it ain't gonna happen.
Yeah, it's probably nothing more than a Deadhead (crack)"pipe"dream
to Owlgore.
JO> Unless it's just a huge joke, this bill is supposed to pass the
JO> Senate within a month. Either way...considering just the
JO> idea--I really do think Owlgore could be more dangerous than
JO> Clinton !
RC> Odds are, it's just a satire.
I haven't heard anything since then, and if no one else has, it must
have been that...still...it sure makes ya wonder, don't it? What
interesting times we live in!
