Make sure you have the water level up to the right level. I am sitting eating
lunch in my empty classroom with three tanks going, as well as a couple
rivertanks. I cannot hear the aquariums biowheel filters at all, because I
have the water level right up to the outlet, so it softly cascades into the
tank. It is enough to break the surface tension for gas exchange, but it is
quiet.

If the noise is coming from the motor, the impeller could have a partial
obstruction, setting its rotation off a bit.

Don't take the wheel out, though, because you will have a dei-off of beneficial
bacteria.
