I appeciate your point. I think, however, that NetWare for OS/2 has outlived
its practical usefulness. I am not even sure if you can still buy it.
There were several reasons why NetWare for OS/2 has a following. First, it
allowed the NetWare server program to take advantage of OS/2 virtual memory
management, overcoming one of the main deficiencies in the NetWare design.
Second, it allowed running sophisticated server-side processes, such as
database servers, without having to implement them as NLMs.
NetWare for OS/2 did have severe shortcomings. In particularly, NetWare
could not use OS/2 file systems for its own purposes, but had to operate over
its own partition and volumes as in a standard NetWare file server. For an
OS/2 process on the same machine to get access to the NetWare file server
storage space, it had to log in as a client.
