  For three reasons :

    1. Humans are not as good at the repetitve drudge of hand-optimising
as computers are, and are liable to miss opportunities, or
(possibly as a result of misunderstanding of machine-level issues)
to make changes that actually result in poorer code rather than
        better.

    2. It is easier for a compiler writer to recognise and implement
optimisation for a well-known straightforward algorithm.

    3. Most compiler writers assume that programmers will write
        straightforward code anyway.
