I agree to a point, but that pup doesn't hunt well once you bring up pride 
and personal responsibility of each individual for their own well being.
I do not buy into the "cradle to grave" theory, never have, never will.
Nashville is a magnet for these type people, far more than any other 
jurisdiction I have ever worked.  Homeless people abound and after one came 
near killing me with a knife during a burglary apprehension  I lost much of 
my sympsathy. Much direct work with hem showed me that masny of them are 
quite capable of a productibe and successful life but choose not to.
Unfortunately for my fellow, a "soft hand takedown, slightly modified, worked 
extremely well in reactive mode after a foot chase after he unexpectedly 
wheeled on me.
His "death rattle" when we got him up to cuff him was unexpected.
A quick exam disclosed a butcher knife rntered his chest and potruded out his 
back. 
This gem was also carrying one more knife commando style in a chest harness.
He was found to be a Joliett escapee at large for several years.
Next time you hear the slogasn "you meet he nicest people around trains", 
keep this story in mind.
And yes, what you are trained to expect after an incident where you are 
involved in a line of duty death such as this or shooting someone is VERY 
accurate.
And yes, flashbacks occassionally haunt as well as other ptrdicted things but 
mostly I avoid the issue and try to concentrate on more pleasurable 
experiences.
