It was pretty silly, and those who've heard this over the years
forgive the re-telling.
We kept our gear in the same room they did. Some shots of our gear
with theirs is in the book "The Beatles Gear."
So one day I went up to the room while recording in 2 to find a guitar
cord, since mine was shorting out. My drummer laughed and said "Hey
just borrow one from John, he's right down there..." (motioning down
the hall).
Sure enough, about 25 feet down the hall, John is in his AR white
suit, leaning with one arm up on the wall, looking down and speaking
to Yoko.
I told Mike "OK, no problem," fully intending to fake him out and make
him THINK I was going right up to John. I was really going to walk
right by him. Children must play.
So I walk down the hall, and when it gets to the point where I would
have walked by him, I hear him say "Just a minute..." to Yoko, and he
looks right up at me as if to say, "Can I help you?"
Now I come to a dead stop...and start rattling off the following (best
imagined being said as quickly as possible in an effort to get this
painful moment of embarrassment over forever):
Me: "Uh...John, we're recording in Studio 2 and I just broke a guitar
cord and we keep our stuff in the same room as you do so I was
wondering if we might be able to borrow a cable?" (I do remember it
being at least that long a question).
There is no photo evidence of the color of my face at that moment but
it felt really warm.
JOHN:" Do you know Mal or Kevin? "(Kevin is the young red haired guy
seen moving gear around in "Let It Be")
Me: "Oh, yeah, yes I know them...."
JOHN: "OK just tell 'em I said it was alright...."
Me: "Oh thanks John, I'll get it right back to them when were
done....thanks.."
John: Smiles and nods, goes back to speaking with Yoko.
Tom: Walks back toward Mike, all the while trying to juggle feelings
of relief, terror, and a huge smile.
Sorry it wasn't anything more significant, but it was a rather large
moment for me.
With Paul and George, I actually got to get into conversations about
guitars and recording, and those were incredible, dreamlike
conversations (dreamlike in the sense that when they are speaking with
you, there is a part of you that is listening to every word, and
another part that is whispering "A Hard Days Night,"
"Help," "Ticket
to Ride," "She Loves You," "Ed Sullivan,"
"Shea Stadium...."
etc...;).
Fortunately, George and Paul were so down to earth it was like talking
to anyone else who worked at the studio, absolutely no attitude
whatsoever, none. I was told by EMI staff that as long as they felt
you were a fellow artist there, and not just a fan looking for an
autograph, they would be terrific, and that proved to be the case.
One never gets over the shock of actually seeing people you have only
seen on TV and on album covers walking toward you in a narrow
hallway, whether it be Peter Noone (which it was one afternoon), or The
Hollies (one evening), but with The Beatles there is of course a
whole different level of awe ( and I don't use that term gushingly, it
just is what it is), especially on the occasions when all four of them
were walking toward you, and one (Ringo) looks over and says "Hi, hows
the work goin'?".
You were definitely not in Kansas anymore;)
