Yeah,  maybe.  :-)

My first install,  which was Slackware 4.0,  fit nicely on a 1G or so
drive, and I installed *everything*,  since I wanted to check out all sorts
of stuff.

Last one I tried on a drive that size was Slackware 9.something,  and it
fit if you didn't want X or KDE.  Still have that drive sitting here and am
thinking about putting it into use on something or other,  I haven't
decided yet.

So I guess it depends on what you want to do with it.

Nothing wrong with "small" drives,  my firewall/router is using
an 80M drive I pulled out of a 386sx low-profile box...
