My cousin took me to a boyscouts type organization once a week
on the back of a jet black Ariel Square 4 when I was about 12.
It did have a distinctive sound, I remember that much. We have
some home movies of him on his Ariel but no sound (8mm film). 

At idle it sounded like mechanized scissors but when the
throttle was opened it sounded a bit like a 'turbo' sound when
riding on it.
