Some time ago, maybe as long as 10-12 years ago, I stumbled across a mailing list which discussed doing exactly that. It was called something like DIY-EFI, if I remember right. The biggest stumbling block that I can remember is that they kept on talking about some "SAE White Papers" which weren't readily available for download, and it took some really nontrivial amount of money to get past that. Oh well. But yeah, people will hack anything, given the chance, and there's nothing much new about that.
