subject: Spoiler: The Raven

The new Voyager episode, The Raven, is *very* uneven. There are some
really good things -- enough for me to consider this a reasonably good
episode. But there is one section of around ten minutes or so....well,
see below. (Slight spoilers, but I won't give away the conclusion...)

This is a story of Seven coming to grips with her capture by the Borg at
age 6. Resonances from a nearby Borg ship trigger her programming to
return to the collective -- first exhibited by a series of dreams or
flashbacks.
The first part of the episode, in which Seven herself tries to figure
this out, and the end of the episode in which we see the resolution, are
pretty good. Nice character development, and nice photography, too.
Levar Burton is the Director, BTW.
Howeverm for ten minutes or so in the middle of the episode, in which
Seven goes on a Borgish rampage, storms through Voyager and steals a
shuttle (as seen on the promo) the episode is laughably bad.
For example:
Chakotay: She's heading for the shuttle bay.
Tuvok (strolling down a corridor with a security team): We are hurrying
to get there.
Why doesn't the security team use site to site transport to
get to the shuttle bay, if they are in such a hurry?
Next thing you know, Seven uses site to site transport to get past a
force field.
A few minutes later, Tuvok explains how he will beam into the shuttle
and have the advantage of surprise to traquilize Seven. He beams in,
and she is standing behind him, and uses a Vulcan Nerve Pinch to
incapacitate Tuvok.
It does get better, but there are some unexplained things that really
*should* have been explained. Discussing them much more would be too
much of a spoiler.
Oh, well. Next week is a rerun, as Q returns to have a baby.
