CA>WC> If professional car mechanics are anything like their
CA>WC> motorcycle equivalents it ain't good.

CA>No it's not good at all.

CA>I took my Lincoln to a local mechanic and told him "This is a
CA>heavy car and it HAS to stop when I hit the brakes". My brakes
CA>had gone out (to the floor) and I wanted that to NOT happen
CA>again. I did not set a price nor ask for 'cheap'. I got the car
CA>back and two weeks later driving home the same thing happened
CA>_again_. I was furious but remained calm when I returned the
CA>car and was told he had replaced everything _but_ the rear
CA>cylinders which were both leaking fluid (profusely). I
CA>instructed him to replace the cylinders, bill me for the parts,
CA>but no additional labor which he did. So far the brakes have
CA>been working but now I'm 'gun-shy' with very little confidence
CA>the brakes will continue to work.

Automobile Mechanics are Nortoriously BAD. And most are out and out
Crooks. And the cost of repair is NO indication at all of getting a
 good job.
That is why for over 40 years I maintained my own Cars. Except for the
Automatic Transmission I did Everything. For soem years now I have not
been capable of doing that any longer. Two reasons, Forst my malidies of
Age prevents me form doing so but also the Complexity of the car has
increased 100 fold since my High point in Automobile Repair Knowledge.
Kinda like Computers. The Technology has past me by.
I have been through several mechenics in recent years and have yet to
find one I really Trust.
Meanwhile my CAr Repair cost column in my budget has increased
dramaticly. In the past three years I have paid more to maintain my Cars
then in the Previously 20 years.
