What you see when you read is the characters that are governed by the CodePage your operating system is set to use. The editor also uses the same CP unless it's configured otherwise. Your case is a bit difficult because IIRC your OpSys is Win XP but you use a DOS version of MultiMail and probably even it's built-in editor.
