Here are some questions:
1. Apparently the ASX recently changed file format for their
stock data. Also apparantly, it is comma-delimited. Why we
are having trouble with Stockeasy 1.73 attempting to use the
old format is still unknown. I am after both old and new data
format.
2. When getting bonus shares you have to apportion it to your
existing parcels. How does the Tax Department aportion this
for CGT purposes? I was writing a program to do this, and the
major distribution is relatively straightforward, but the
apportioning of the single ones is not straightforward.
Originally I thought I would just round up or down and then go
and add/remove one at the end as required for an exact fit.
But this would skew the results if e.g. I had one parcel of
170000 and one parcel of 100, if I have one share left over,
then adding it to the former would produce the least error.
Then it can be taken one step further, looking at the rounding.
E.g. if I had a parcel of 170000 and a parcel of 100000, but
the 100000 got a portion of 16.4999999 which rounded became 16,
whilst the 170000 got 27.5, which rounded up became 28, if I
still have 1 left over, the 16.4999999 going to 17 would
probably produce the least mathematical error. And then there
is the problem of what happens when there is another bonus. Are
you meant to redo all calculations or are you meant to use your
mathematical rounding in the first bonus with the next one?
3. If I have two bundles of shares, can I choose which parcel I
want to consider to be sold. Does certificated/CHESS have a
bearing here?
4. Can I choose whether I want to be considered a "share trader"
myself, and on a per-share basis? E.g. if I have both mining
stocks for heavy trading, and blue-chips for long term investment,
can I write losses on the former against my income, whilst get
the blue-chips treated as normal capital gain?
BFN. Paul.
