This is not quite the syntax you want.  Correct are:

   appli 0 log     -- 'input' to stdin (0); stdout (1) to 'log'

   appli 2> err              -- stderr (2) to 'err'

   appli 2>&1                -- stderr (2) to stdout (1)

   appli 2>&1 | appliother   -- stderr (2) to stdout (1), piped as stdin to
                                'appliother'
