PK>If you give any kind of work and I think each teacher should give
PK>all students daily homework to do and also collect and grade same.
Let me cite some problems with this... First, what do you
do about copying? What do you do about homework done, but
incorrect or incomplete? If you grade them, what about the
kids who don't do homework but do ok on tests (who may fail
because of homework - this happens, btw)? What do I say to
parents who then complain that their kid is doing 3 hours
of homework every night, and don't I think that's excessive?
How about those kids who have disabilities which make their
homework take twice as long as everyone else?
Getting past that, I collect 120 papers each day; how long
do you think this is going to take me to correct, not just
check off? I mean, let's be widely optimistic and figure
a minute a paper - That's 2 hours tied up on homework! NOW
I have to plan for the next day, work up the assignment,
etc - Let's say half an hour if I've been doing this course
for awhile. NOW, I have to work out the answers to the
homework (which may or may not be in the book). This is ok
if you're doing addition, but what if you're doing AP
physics? Those problems take time! So, I get home at 3:30,
sit down and work until, say 7, eat dinner late, maybe relax
for an hour or two and hit the bed. Then get up the next
day and do it all again. No watching my kids' activities,
no helping them with homework, no chores around the house
(I guess I COULD forgoe that relaxation period).
Now I get to class... I take attendence, collect homework,
hand back homework, go over questions on the homework...
Figure this takes 10-15 minutes... I now have 25-30 minutes
to teach (actually less since the kids usually stop
listening the last 3-4 minutes)... I really don't think
this is going to work out; do you?
PK>If said teacher can not or does not have the time, said teacher should
PK>have an assistant.
But we don't, and we never will. Each assistant is going to
cost the district several thousand a year; most districts
this is going to mean another couple million in costs.. AND,
this doesn't address the OTHER problems above...
PK>It would be a lot less costly then the said students not graduating
PK>and or becoming criminals.
PK>Who pays for that? Is that more costly or what.
I agree, but this is DEFERRED cost, and it's hidden cost.
When you pay school taxes, it's easy to put a figure on your
outlay, but how do you figure your outlay on these other
costs?
