subject: Want to put a 6 or 8 foot

Hi everyone :

I'm considering putting a 6 or 8 foot freshwater aquarium on the second
floor of my house, but I'm a little concerned about the weight. For
example, a 72x24x24 aquarium is 179.5 gallons, which, at 8.32lbs per gallon
is 1,493 pounds, not including the actual weight of the tank plus gravel,
rock etc. I'd likely be around 1,550 to 1,600 lbs with a 6 foot aquarium.
For an 8-foot aquarium I'd be a little over 2,000 lbs.

The joists of my house are 2"x10" (1.5"x9.5" in
actuality) spaced 16" on
centre. The subfloor is standard 3/4" plywood, with 5/8" oak hardwood
flooring on top of that.

Does anyone have experience with aquariums of this size sitting on joists
and flooring like that ? Should I even be considering this ? Even on the
first floor, the set up would be the same, as I have a full basement (the
first floor doesn't sit directly on a slab). I can't believe that everyone
who has tanks of this size have them set up directly on concrete slabs.

So - for those of you who DO have tanks this size, what has been your
experience ? Recommendations ?

Thanks - Shawn
