Yes, I did but thought I'd connected with an I-Modem produced by a
different division
Because the problem is common with UK x2 code.  And did surface with earlier
US/Canada x2 code too.  This from ZOOM_MODEM (ZOOM in z1) just today:

I've got an Internal Zoom 56K and I'm having trouble connecting with
USR modems of most any type.  Does anyone have a reliable init
string that will work with FrontDoor or the Shotgun Mailer.
Any help is greatly appreciated
