Ever had a 35 year old who wanted to find out what was wrong with him so
that he could live a normal life present himself to you?  I'd sent him
to treatment for chemical addiction when he was in his 20's, around 11
years prior.  Mental health professionals could not handle his temper
tantrumes and rages.
I tried twice to get him to adhere to the standard diet in recovery for
alcoholics.  He insisted upon clinging to his high intake of processed
sugars, something he had been used to from birth due to a very high
incidence of food allergies.
This one young man alone has used up countless hours of time spent by
medical, nursing, social service and other professionals trying to help
him.  I managed to get him properly diagnosed as an adult: Bipolar with
Attention Deficit Disorder, but he would not give up his sugar again.
He did go back to the psychiatrist who wanted to put him back on the
Ritalin again which didn't do diddly for him as a child.  The
psychiatrist was fully aware of his potential for taking a the average
clinic apart when irritated and I hope provided some protection for the
clerical staff.
There are others just like him.  Folks who have been mistreated from
birth and who do not recover.  They tend to end up on the welfare rolls
and crime statistics rather than on any other, Jerry.
Drop outs from mainstream society.
