Depends why it says that. DaniS506.ADD and IBM1S506.ADD both find IDE
controller attached HDs when the BIOS says NONE, as long as the
controller is enabled and the devices are properly jumpered. The
motherboard BIOS is required only to get a boot device bootstrapped, and
only if there there are no "SCSI" devices with a boot BIOS.

This is true, as it would be for any kind of proprietary driver that
might ship on an accompanying CD for any OS. No kind of driver can do
anything before some OS loads one.

Same as any modern host controller installed in a PCI slot. Promise is
not unique in this regard.

Some other options that might be there are AUTO, LARGE, and specific
values for cylinders, heads & sectors. On older BIOS this was always the
first screen. In newer ones it's typically down a layer or a second
screen.
